If the term "cowabunga" conjures up images of amphibians rather than surfing, then it is likely you've been bitten by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles bug. After all, those lovable green guys have been around for decade, in every corner of the globe, and we the people just can't seem to let them go. If you need proof, consider the most current revival. That's right, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are scheduled to karate kick and ninja chop into a theater near you this very summer. Read on to learn more:
The premise. It seems that the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie is starting from the very beginning and setting history straight--or, you could say, it is rewriting history altogether. Any TMNT fan knows that the turtles mutated because of a toxic chemical that leaked into the sewer system. In this new take on the turtles' story, the turtles are not mutants. They are actually the spawn of an alien race that lands on planet earth. Our favorite bad-guy fighters rise up together to fight the aliens when they realize they like planet earth and their people are trying to take it over.
The main players. The latest TMNT movie, simply entitled Ninja Turtles, will be produced by Michael Bay. Bay is known for producing some visually outstanding, big name films (Transformers, for example), so many are waiting on pins and needles to see what type of big screen magic Bay will bring to the turtle story. Chances are, Bay will be able to redeem himself for changing the ninja turtle origin with his special effects. Also slated to star in the upcoming film are Megan Fox (presumably as April O'Neil, but Bay has yet to verify that) and Alan Ritchson (the former Aquaman, and Hunger Games player) as Raphael. Ninja Turtles, the movie, will be directed by Jonathan Liebesman, of Wrath of the Titans fame.
What the turtles are saying. Okay, so the turtles can't talk . . . and they're not even real. But, still one can speculate that Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael might be a little upset to learn that they are now aliens. Oh, and they're not teenagers anymore, either. The turtles have already starred in three feature films (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 1990, followed by two sequels, in 1991 and 1993)--all which stayed true to the original story line, as conceived by TMNT creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Maybe it is time for a reboot? Bay seems to think it is.
How will Michael Bay's version of the TMNT story hold up? Only time will tell. Ninja Turtles is scheduled to be released in June of 2013.
